Take a trip back in time to the golden age of jazz, when hot spots like the Cotton Club featured the best acts from Harlem and swing music was just starting to infuse the country with renewed energy. The Tony Award-winning "Ain't Misbehavin'" is a song-filled celebration of the timeless music of Thomas "Fats" Waller, who penned more than 400 songs during his career -- including "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," "Squeeze Me" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." The talented and energetic cast at Aurora's Vintage Theatre brings down the house with Waller's rowdy, raunchy and humorous songs that capture the mood of the '30s and reflect the composer's view of life as a journey meant for pleasure and play. Some 65 years after it was first produced, Arthur Miller's ("Death of a Salesman") American tragedy about the Keller family -- entrepreneur father, devoted mother, war-hero sons -- and their fall from grace still grips audiences. Set immediately following World War II, the play tells the story of one day and night during which past secrets surface and threaten to shake the entire Keller clan to its core. This deeply engaging tale of morality and consciousness explores the bonds of family and social responsibility as two very different generations seek to heal and rebuild. Inspired by a true story, "All My Sons" won two Tony Awards and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the Best American Play of 1947. This intense drama, which raises questions of morality and the limits of family ties, comes to the Shaver-Ramsey Gallery by way of Cherry Creek Theatre to celebrate the 100th birthday of its revered author. While comparing the demographics of the 1960s with those of today, former Denver Public Schools board member Laura Lefkowits has uncovered some truths about segregation that might surprise you. In her talk at the History Colorado Center, Lefkowits looks at the effects of forced busing 40 years after Denver was the first major city outside the South to have its school desegregation battle decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. The judges ruled in 1973 that the Mile High City's schools were definitely and deliberately segregated, and thus began more than 20 years of busing, a controversial policy that did achieve some balance before white flight to the suburbs killed the program's effectiveness. And now Denver might be more segregated than ever. [less-]

Where does reality end and dream life begin? That's the question at the heart of the "four wildly different takes on our wonderful, warped world" that comprise Evergreen Players' "Reality Check", an eclectic night of short-form theater comprised of playwrights both well-known and new. Works include the darkly comic "The Lifeboat Is Sinking" by Shel Silverstein ("The Giving Tree"), in which a husband and wife, sitting safely on their bed, imagine they're on a sinking boat in the middle of a terrible storm -- and must decide whether to throw the husband's mother overboard or condemn them all to die. Mark Harvey Levine's "The Remote" centers around a couch potato couple who become possessed by their television, while the heroine of Jane Martin's "Triangle" breaks down as she learns that her boyfriend may have had an affair with a goddess. The evening also includes the premiere of "Psalm of Purgation", a new work by Colorado playwright Scott Gibson. [less-]
