You can't just waltz into someone's heart -- sometimes you have to swing, foxtrot and cha-cha your way there. That's one of the many insights at the core of "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks", the beloved comedy drama. Lily Harrison, a Baptist minister's widow, hires acerbic dance instructor Michael Minetti to teach her how to dance. But after a series of initial clashes, the two take on a different subject entirely: learning each other's innermost secrets, fears and desires. Written by Richard Alfieri ("The Sisters", "Starstruck"), this warm and intimate tale shows what happens when two people overcome their outward differences and discover an unlikely, but profound, connection. Now "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks" comes to Vintage Theatre in a fresh and illuminating production from director Craig A. Bond. [less-]

Where does reality end and dream life begin? That's the question at the heart of the "four wildly different takes on our wonderful, warped world" that comprise Evergreen Players' "Reality Check", an eclectic night of short-form theater comprised of playwrights both well-known and new. Works include the darkly comic "The Lifeboat Is Sinking" by Shel Silverstein ("The Giving Tree"), in which a husband and wife, sitting safely on their bed, imagine they're on a sinking boat in the middle of a terrible storm -- and must decide whether to throw the husband's mother overboard or condemn them all to die. Mark Harvey Levine's "The Remote" centers around a couch potato couple who become possessed by their television, while the heroine of Jane Martin's "Triangle" breaks down as she learns that her boyfriend may have had an affair with a goddess. The evening also includes the premiere of "Psalm of Purgation", a new work by Colorado playwright Scott Gibson. [less-]

Take a trip back in time to the golden age of jazz, when hot spots like the Cotton Club featured the best acts from Harlem and swing music was just starting to infuse the country with renewed energy. The Tony Award-winning "Ain't Misbehavin'" is a song-filled celebration of the timeless music of Thomas "Fats" Waller, who penned more than 400 songs during his career -- including "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," "Squeeze Me" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." The talented and energetic cast at Aurora's Vintage Theatre brings down the house with Waller's rowdy, raunchy and humorous songs that capture the mood of the '30s and reflect the composer's view of life as a journey meant for pleasure and play. Before he created the hit musical "Rent", Jonathan Larson wrote "tick, tick... BOOM!", a semi-autobiographical tale about a composer living the bohemian lifestyle and taking a hard look at his life on the eve of his 30th birthday. His girlfriend's desire to marry and leave New York City for the suburbs, possible career changes and all sorts of other pressures cause him to question his ultimate dream -- writing the great American musical. Originally written as a solo piece, playwright David Auburn revised the 10-character work for three actors following Larson's death in 1996. Containing the kind of powerhouse musical numbers that helped make "Rent" a smash hit, "Tick, Tick ... Boom!" is an endearing, engaging look at persevering to make your dreams a reality. Don't miss Ignite Theatre's production of this exhilarating work by the late, great Larson. [less-]
